Becoming Practiceful

“The most important of my discoveries have been suggested to me by my failures.” – Sir Humphrey Davy

なる isn’t all that difficult on its own. Besides, it’s basically just things you’ve already learned but used in a few specific ways.

It’ll probably be better practice for you if you use なる to come up with some of your own Japanese. Time for another Lang-8 post (you should be posting posts on Lang-8 for practice more often than I tell you to here, though, you know).

Here’s the subject and some optional questions to help you write something:

What You Wanted To Become

Start with.. 「小さい頃に______になりたかった」This means “when I was small, I wanted to become a __________”

Did you think this thing was cool? Fun? Exciting?

Why did you want to become this thing?

Did you become this thing?

What did you eventually become (now)?

Do you like what you’ve become?

This will probably amount to a good 5-10 sentence post on Lang-8, and you’ll be able to use なる a few different times as well. Post it up and see how you do – figure out what you did wrong and learn from any mistakes!

By finishing this page, you’ve practiced なる quite a bit (including all the other practice stuff). Do you feel comfortable with it, at least a bit? We’ll start integrating it into future lessons too, to make sure you get more practice.
