What Was Expected

We’re going to take a look at はず in a slightly different way than we have from the previous two grammar review pages. た-form+はず isn’t quite as useful as the others, I think, but it will let us look at some tricky past tense / present tense issues. Think of this page as a page of puzzles you have to figure out, it should be fun, I think.
On this page we’re going to keep things simple. I’ll give you a sentence in Japanese, then you have to figure out what it means. Pay close attention to the tenses, it’s gonna get tricky.
aすし を たべる はず だ
I expect to eat sushi
aすし を たべた はず だった
I expected to eat sushi
aボビーさん は すし を たべた はず だ
I expect Bobby ate sushi
aボビーさん は すし を たべる はず だった
I expected that Bobby will eat sushi
aひとみさん は パーティー に いった はず だ
I expect Hitomi went to the party
aあの でんしゃ に のった はず だ
I expect (he) rode that train
aジョーさん は この ラジオ を こわした はず だった
I expected that Joe broke this radio
aおどろいた はず だ！
I expect (he) was surprised!
aのりかえた はず だ
I expect he changed trains
aボビーさん は ゲーム を かった はず だった
I expected Bobby bought that game
aせんせい を きこえる はず だ
I expect you can hear the teacher
