I Expect You Will Study Japanese…
日本語を勉強するはずだ! - Koichi
For this grammar point, it’s mostly just about the rules and using it enough in order to remember said rules. The focus is going to be on verbs for this page, but there’ll be enough of the others to get your feet wet, I think. Let’s start with some simple examples, then you’ll try too:
aすし を たべるはず です。
I expect to eat sushi.
First we have すしをたべる (I will eat sushi). Then, by adding はずです onto that, you’re changing the meaning of the whole sentence. Instead of saying “I will eat sushi” you’re saying “I expect to eat sushi” Maybe you’re going to go to a party later and they’re going to have sushi (and you’ve heard they’re going to have sushi, so you’re expecting it).
aあたらしい iPod を はっぴょうする はずだ。
I expect the new iPod to be announced.
For this, you have [あたらしい iPod を はっぴょうする] as one block, and then when you add はずです to it, it becomes your expectation. You’ve heard some pretty solid rumors on the new iPod, and you’ve been reading all the blogs. You’re pretty sure you’re right on this one… therefor, you can expect it to be announced.
aアメリカ に いく はずだ。
I expect to go to America.
How about you? Where do you expect to go?
________________________________
Location に いく はずだ。
Oh, and what do you expect to eat, tonight/today?

Food を たべる はずだ。
You can’t just eat things… what do you expect to drink?

Drink を のむ はずだ。
Now, let me tell you about “Freddy.” He’s a made up person, but here’s some information about him:
- Freddy is 30 years old (30さい).
- Freddy is a doctor (いしゃ).
- His name is Freddy (フレディさん)
- He will play Starcraft (スタークラフト)
- Freddy is pretty (きれい)
- Freddy is tall (たかい) but he used to be short (みじかい)
Now, using the information above (and mind you, this is just information I told you, so you’re pretty sure, but not 100% sure) how would you say the following things about him?
I expect that Freddy’s name is Freddy.
aフレディさん の なまえ は 「フレディ」の はずだ。
I expect Freddy is 30 years old
aフレディさん は 30さい の はずだ。
I expect Freddy is a doctor
aフレディさん は いしゃ の はずだ。
I expect Freddy was a student
aフレディさん は がくせい だった はず だ。
I expect he will play Starcraft
aフレディさん は スタークラフト を する はずだ。
I expect Freddy is pretty
aフレディさん は きれいな はずだ。
I expect Freddy is tall
aフレディさん は たかい はずだ。
I expect Freddy was short
aフレディさん は みじかかった はずだ。
Let’s dive even farther into creating your own sentences using はず (and dictionary form verbs!). Once you feel pretty good about the stuff on this page, move on. If you had trouble, go over everything again – this is one of those grammar points where experience means quite a bit, despite being pretty straight forward!
